Royal Kisstory

People from around the world watched as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex, got married at St George’s Chapel in Windsor. The royal wedding was estimated to have cost just over £30 million, and more than 100,000 people lined the route of Harry and Meghan’s wedding procession to see the newlyweds as they left the chapel in a carriage.

About 18 million people in the UK tuned in to the royal wedding of the year, with the ceremony becoming the BBC’s most watched TV event of the year. A further 29 million people watched the wedding in America and a whopping 2 billion people were estimated to have watched the wedding worldwide!

The royal wedding was a real social event, with Nielsen Social reporting that it generated 3.4 million tweets and 3.5 million interactions on Facebook.

The most tweeted moment of the wedding was during Bishop Michael Curry’s sermon, with 40,000 tweets per minute. The moment that Prince Harry and Meghan exchanged vows saw 27,000 tweets per minute. Our new Duchess of Sussex was the most mentioned individual on Twitter that day, closely followed by Prince Harry.

Kensington palace shared 16 videos and photos on Instagram, which have over 12 million likes (and counting!). Overall, 60 million users worldwide liked, commented on, and shared Royal wedding content. Over 660,000 Instagram stories were created that related directly to the wedding, 250,000 users used the app’s crown sticker and there were over a million posts on the day of the wedding itself.

The royal wedding saw several firsts – Meghan was the first royal bride to walk down the aisle without an escort, the first American with an HRH title, the first royal bride from a mixed-race background, and it was the first royal wedding to feature a gospel choir. The Duke and Duchess’ wedding was also the first broadcast in 4k, thanks to Sky, who laid 27km of cable to broadcast the coverage in UHD.

And for a bit of Friday fun, here’s a roundup of some of our favourite reactions to the royal wedding:
